Obituary
PATON — Joyce Adelaide Paton. On April 2, 2006 at the McCormick Home, Joyce Paton, age 84 years, widow of the late Robert James (Bob) Paton, passed away peacefully in her sleep. Also predeceased by her brother Sandy and sister-in-law Marion, sister Jean and brother-in-law Peter Rogers, son-in-law Greg Whitfield, nephews Jim Matheson and Peter Rogers, niece Susan MacIntosh and brothers and sisters-in-law Bill and Pearl Paton, Frank and Lorna Paton, Mildred and Bert Crappere and Marg and Gord Carson. Joyce, oldest daughter of Harry and Lila (Cream) MacIntosh, was born October 16, 1921 in Halifax where she met her future husband Bob at a war-time dance. They eventually settled in London and started a successful plumbing business. Joyce also kept busy raising five children, gardening and doing volunteer work. She was a Girl Guide leader in Hyde Park, member of the Women’s Institute in Thorndale and a dedicated 10 year LHSC gift shop volunteer. Joyce was keenly interested in politics and ran for alderman in London with her nephew Jim Matheson as her campaign manager. She had a great appreciation for music and could be moved to tears by Tchaikovsky’s Pathetique. Joyce took pride in her ability to recite the poetry of her youth and was particularly fond of the verse of Robert Service. She liked to start her day with the crossword puzzle, and frequently challenged her grandchildren to a game of cribbage, scrabble or cards around the kitchen table. Joyce had a special place in her heart for each of her grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time with her sister Joan and on a hot summer day, loved to stop by for a swim in Joan and Hal’s pool. Joyce derived great pleasure from having all her family together and these gatherings of the clan” she initiated will be greatly missed.”

Joyce was a great friend to our mother, Elske De Jong,
(1915-2005) who lived in Chelsey Park. When our mother
had hip replacement surgery, Joyce made sure exercises
were done and made countless cups of tea.
They also enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune and
Jeopardy together in the evening.
Our mother thought she was a wonderful person, and
my sister and I appreciated her very much.
Our sincere condolences to all of Joyce’s family.
Margaret and Anna.
I am Joyces grandaughter Catherine and I was surprised when I heard she was sick. Then I thought of the saying ”never give up”. And that’s what she always did, she never gave up. Every time I went over to her house you should have seen the big banana smile she had on when I handed her the dog!Im gonna miss grandma.Alot.
One of favorite memories is of Joyce and I playing cards for hours at the big kitchen table at the farm in Thorndale .
She was a great lady with a great sense of humor and she will be missed.
My condolences to you and your family Liz.

Those were some very happy years for my mom.I know she cherished those memories,as do I.
I send my most sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Joyce Paton.
I also remember the lengthy card games at the farm in Thorndale and how Joyce would get off her chair and walk around the chair to change her luck.
Joyce was a very hospitable person and will always be remembered for her kindness, cheery smile and friendliness.
Joyce will be missed by all but never forgotten.
Thanks for everything Joyce, I will never forget you.
Ray
I would like to express my condolences to Margaret and members of the Paton family. I have many fond memories of Mrs. Paton when she lead the Girl Guides in Hyde Park – especially camping with the Girl Guides.
Dear Liz, Chris, Margaret, Bill and Barb
and Joan & Hal, Bill & Ruth and Art & Verna as well as the rest of the family.
We were extremely saddened to hear of Joyce’s declining health when speaking with Joan just prior to Christmas and further saddened to receive Joan’s call informing us of Joyce’s death.
There will always be a special place in my heart and in my memories as I think of Joyce. I truly felt priviledged to have known her and felt blessed to have been accepted as part of the extended family when my dad married your Aunt Marj. Phil and I, as well as our sons were always so warmly welcomed and so enjoyed spending time with her.
Although our visits whether in person or over the phone, were somewhat infrequent, I always delighted in the opportunity to have those long chats with her. Over the years I’ve spoken often of Joyce to my friends as a woman who I admired. I appreciated her love and dedication to her family, her humour, her keen mind, her vibrancy and her interest in the current happenings of the world around her.
Our thoughts and our love are with all of you. Know that we will be with you in spirit as you gather to celebrate her life and mourn the loss of this very special lady.
I will be in touch with Clare to inform her of the news.
Our love and sincere condolences,
Pat, Phil, Michael and Scott Morris

I wish to express my sincere condolences to Margaret and the Paton family. I have great memories of our days in Hyde Park and Girl Guides. I still have pictures – somewhere -of camping in the Pinery!!! What a great cook your Mom was. Always fun and always a smile.
Clare asked me, on her behalf, to express her sincere condolences to all of the family. When we spoke last evening, she recalled the relationship her mom Marjorie Holmes, had with Joyce and the laughter they often shared. Sending her loving thoughts your way.
P.M. for Clare Holmes
