Dear Mrs McColl and family –
My sincere sympathies to you on the loss of your husband and father. And, my apologies for not being able to attend the visitation to speak to you personally.
Alex McColl lives forever in my memory as the principal who hired me as a graduate from the UWO Faculty of Education to teach music at St George’s Public School. He was a mentor in the truest sense of the word and I learned to become a better teacher because of his kind and understanding supervision. I am certain that one’s first year of teaching is indelibly imprinted in the memory and my memories are still distinct some 30 years later — Each of my memories has the imprint of a fine principal and colleague….and one who supported not only his teachers and pupils to the fullest extent possible, but also music education in our community.
Sincerely
Carol Beynon
McColl Family:
Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the loss
of your dear Alex.
I was so saddened to read the news of Mr. McColl’s death in the newspaper. Mr. McColl was my grade 5 teacher in the early 50’s at Lady Beck Public School. His wife [Miss. Brown] was my grade 1 teacher. I was fortunate to have surprised them by attending their 50th Wedding Anniversary Open House and that they both remembered me! I am blessed to have taken a photo that day and will treasure it forever. I truly looked forward to our planned visitation in their home for talk ‘of the old days’. To his family, I wish to express my condolences and to assure them that he has a place forever in my memories. To ‘Miss. Brown’, I will come and visit you someday soon as we planned. God bless you all in your healing and hold on to all the good memories.
It was with sadness that I read of Mr. McColl’s passing, since I had recently been reading so many wonderful tributes to both he and his wife on the occasion of their anniversary. I was also a pupil of theirs at Lady Beck Public School and have find memories of all who taugtht me. When I am in London and pass by the Highbury-Dundas corner my memories immediately fly back to those days when the school seemed to be so big and I was so small. I spent part of year living in England and when I returned, it was to Mr. McColl’s classroom and I found I was rather behind – especially in math. I can recall spending many minutes (that seemed like hours) up by his desk being corrected and shown over and over the correct way to do problems ! My regards and condolences to the family.
