Dear Dwight and Peter:
I am your mother’s cousin, John Sargeant. Her mother and my father, Dow, were brother and sister.
I was shocked to learn of Chuck’s passing. He and I used to phone each other every so often and chat about what ever came to mind. I really got to know your Dad through your Mother as she and I worked together on Sargeant Family History and she offered many finds, ideas, criticisms and just plain help, in putting together a family history of the Sargeants. They were a fine couple of folks and they had a knack for making you feel at home and that what you had to say was the most important thing they had ever heard. I have nothing but kindly memories of them.
I would not have found out about your Dad’s passing, except that I was engaged in researching the WW1 battalion in which Uncle Jesse Sargeant served. Part of our project is to locate and photograph the grave markers of as many members of the 21st Btn that we can. I happened to go to Guelph on Thursday the 15th to Woodlawn, and asked, in the course of my visit, if they could direct me to Mildred Stratton’s grave. They seemed confused. Then it came out that they were preparing for your father’s interment! What a shock.
I lost my Dad just over a year ago and Mom a few years earlier. It is not easy, but I think that we both have had wonderful parents and have much to be thankful for.
We keep you all in our thoughts and earnest prayers
John Sargeant
