Helen Dorothy Smith

SMITH:
Dr. Helen Dorothy Smith, formerly of London, passed away peacefully in her 95th year at the Vistamere Retirement Residence in Oakville on May 31, 2002. She was born August 13, 1907 in Thorndale, Ontario. Daughter of the late Reverend Horace and Mary Snell and wife of the late Walter Doncaster Smith. She attended the University of Western Ontario and graduated from Medical School in 1931. She then did pediatric research for the Fells Research Academy in Michigan. She served for many years on the London Board of Education both as a trustee and also as Chairman. She also served as Chairman of the Urban and Rural Schools Trustees Association of Ontario. She was a resident doctor of student nurses at Victoria Hospital. In 1967, she was awarded Outstanding Citizen of the Year for London. She also served on the Senate of the University of Western Ontario. She was an active member of St. James Westminster and St. Lukes Anglican Churches. She just completed her 50th Anniversary as a member of the Sisters of St. John the Divine in Toronto. She is survived by her daughter Patty Key of Folkestone, England and her son Michael and his wife Heather of Oakville and her grandchildren Andrew Smith, Cindy Gullett and Chris Smith and great-grandchildren William and Thomas Gullett. She is also survived by her siblings Arthur Snell of Fort Myers, Florida, Gwendolyn Fletcher of Aurora and Lloy McFadden of Waterloo. She is predeceased by her sister Margaret Richman. Along with her many public successes, she will be most remembered as a loving mother and grandmother. Friends will be received by the family from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the A. Millard George Funeral Home, 60 Ridout Street South, London where the funeral service will be conducted in the chapel on Wednesday, June 5th at 2:30 p.m. Interment in Woodland Cemetery, London.
