Renie Long of Delaware, born Irene Alice Melchior in her 69th year, on May 30th 2002, at London Health Sciences Centre – Westminster Campus, following a 3 year fight with cancer. Her strength and determination to live amazed and inspired everyone she met. Renie was predeceased by her husband Gerry Long in 1998. Survived by her children, Jim and his wife Sarah, Dennis and his wife Mari, and David and his partner Rob. Renie will be missed by her 7 grandchildren, Ryan, Rhianna, Kate, Spencer, Isabel, Sophie, and Aidan. She will be dearly missed by her twin brother Ron Melchior and his wife Lorraine of Calgary Alberta. Born March 16th, 1934 to John and Amelia Melchior, near Port Burwell Ontario, her early years were spent on a tobacco farm and attending a one room school. The family moved to Tillsonburg and then to London where she graduated from South S.S. in 1952. Marriage and family quickly followed. Renie and her husband were founding partners in Wood Lynn Farms, which their son Jim continues to operate. Renie was a member of Lambeth United Church, counsellor for Delaware in the Township of Middlesex Centre from 1997-2002, counsellor of Delaware Township 1991-1997, member and Vice Chair of the Farm Products Marketing Board Appeal Tribunal 1987-1993, the first woman President of the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Association, Past Chair of Agricorp (crop insurance agency), member of the First Board of the Ontario Centre for Farm Machinery and Food Processing Technology, a past president of the Farm Safety Association of Ontario. Renie also ran as a candidate for the Provincial P.C. party in the riding of Middlesex in the 1987 election. Her resolution and commitment to her family, business and community were a cornerstone of her life. Friends will be received by the family from 1-4 and 7-9pm Sunday at the A. Millard George Funeral Home, 60 Ridout Street South, London. The funeral service will be conducted at Lambeth United Church, 4268 Colonel Talbot Road, Lambeth on Monday, June 3rd, 2002 at 11:00am with Reverend Dr. D. Colin Zavitz officiating. Cremation with a private interment at a later date.
