This morning, I read with sadness, the passing of Bill Payne. Bill was two years older than me, but from the time we were very young, we were next door neighbors. At a young age, we played cowboys & played street games. When we were older, we built soap-box racers and in winter, went sledding in a nearby quarry. Around 1940, my family bought a small cottage on a nearby lake. We had no car and it was 11 miles into town. My mother was badly disabled with arthritis but she took me, Bill and my younger nephew to this small cottage for 3 to 4 weeks…no electricity, just a woodstove, an outhouse and an old wooden row boat. We would clean and fill the lamps (coaloil),and gather small wood for the cook stove. Once every week, we had to row this heavy old boat to an ice house 2 miles up the lake. We had 2 sets of oars. It would take us hours. A walk to the store for supplies was 2 to 3 hours, but we always had fun. Bill loved to fish. We would go out in early morning and catch 5 or 6 bass or large pike in a couple of hours. After public school, we both chose friends closer to our own age. Bill sang in St. George’s choir, a well known & much travelled boys choir. In 1951, Bill sang at our wedding. My wife Jessica and I chummed with Bill and Marie when Bill joined the army. Bill came around to see me 2 or 3 times after he was injured. We went fishing on one visit, I think in the mid sixties. Bill became ill with a balance problem in the boat, but we had a nice visit. As I remember, some of his memories of our past friendship had been taken away by his injury. I hope this short note gives your family a peek into Bill’s early days and our early friendship. My wife and I are in fairly good health for being 70 and 72 years of age. At the present time, I have been waiting for 4 months to have a hernia repaired so I am pretty well confined to short walks and watching TV. We have 2 boys and 2 girls in our family, and each couple have 2 children. From Jessie & I and our family, we hope this will remind you of happy and more carefree times. Our deepest condolences.
