It is with great sadness the family of Amy Elizabeth Grieve (nee Bowerman) announce her passing on Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at the Dearness Home at age 101. She was the wife of the late Elliott David Grieve who died in 1956. The couple who married August 8, 1934 had three daughters: Shirleyan English and her husband Douglas, Sharon Zeisner and her husband Robert and Sandra Wagner. She had eight grandchildren: David English and his partner Sharon Lindala, Sharon Lee English, Jeffrey, John Zeisner and his wife Victoria, Catherine Zeisner-Boyd and her husband Lennie Boyd, Kim Ziebell and her husband Terry, Kelly Northup and her husband Brian and Ryan McFadden and his wife Kari, There are also eight great-grandchildren: Rolfe, Portia, Amy Elizabeth, Daniel, Sarah, Meaghan, Paige and Cordelia. Amy was born in Tyendinaga Twp., near Belleville on June 4, 1906. After attending Normal School in North Bay, she taught elementary school in Trout Lake near Bancroft and in Northern Ontario schools at Tomiko and Elk Lake. During the Second World War, she founded the Finnish Red Cross in Cobalt, ON. Later, she helped found the Girl Guide troop in Elk Lake. She was a vivacious woman, with great energy who walked three miles a day when she was in her 80’s and was most particular about diet long before that became fashionable. An avid bridge player, she was known for her prodiguous memory, curious brain, great wit and excellent cooking. She travelled a great deal and always remarked that her favourite trip was by ship on the last voyage of the Stefan Batory to Poland and back. When her sight failed at 90, she took to Talking Books with a gusto and taught herself to knit afghans although unable to see. She remained interested in current events, particularly space projects, almost to the end. Visitation will be on Sunday, June 24th from 2 to 4 p.m. at the A. Millard George Funeral Home, 60 Ridout Street South, London. Burial will take place next to her husband at Terrace Lawn Cemetery in North Bay.
