Sandy & I have known Maurice from Law School days where our friendship began. We frequented many auctions together, one of his many passions. Although my practice did not sorrespons with Maurice’s, I admired his will and determination and ability to accomplish many things. There are many fond memories that shall remain.
We enjoyed reuniting at our five year reunions from UWO Law, although we all missed him at the immediate past event.
We regret that we shall not be able to attend the visitation, as we shall be out of town but in an area of the Province that was appreciated by Maurice.
Our deepest condolances and thoughts are with his family.
He will be sadly missed, being one of the ‘institutions’ of our class…and our profession

We are very sorry to hear of the passing of Judge Genest, About 15 years ago we sat together at a Foster parent banquet, when I mentioned that our oldest daughter Kristy was interested in becoming a lawyer the Judge invited her to come to his chambers and to have a look around the court room. He sat her up on ;the bench and took pictures of her. While she did not pursue becoming a lawyer she did go on to work with women and children at one of the shelters in our city. Visiting with the judge did make a lasting impression on her and we will never forget his kindness.

My dear Lolly, I was so sorry to hear of the death of your dad. Even though you knew he was so very sick, it always comes as a shock. I read his biography on-line in the Free Press. I had no idea he had had such an amazing life and had done so much to help others. You must be very proud of him. Love, love, love: Howard

To the family of Judge Genest:
It is with great sorrow to hear that such a formidable gentle man has died. I appeared in Judge Genest’s courtroom early in my career as a lawyer and a few times as a social worker for the CAS. Judge Genest always treated those in his court with respect and compassion. Judge Genest did what he thought right and he was usually right. His judgment and wisdom came from his heart and he will be truly missed.

Dear Susan and family: I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Maurice. As you know, Judge Genest has always had a special place in the hearts of those who worked at the Family Court Clinic. I am sure that we will all continue to be inspired by his accomplishments and, above all, his compassion and concern for youth. May you find some comfort in knowing he touched so many.

Dear Susan: It is with deep sorrow that we have lost such a wonderful, caring man. His presence in my life, although not frequent, definitely made a difference for my children and I when we needed help the most. I enjoyed meeting both of you at the office and could just feel the warmth of his compassion when we spoke. I am currently in Norway when I heard of his passing, and regret that I am not able to attend the funeral, but please know that he will always be in my heart in a very special place.

My sincerst sympathy to the Genest family, especially Jean . I knew Maurice and Jean from Lachute High School. I wanted to share a special memory of Maurice. When I was in probably grade 5 or 6 I wrote a small poem for our year book. Maurice made a point of encouraging and congratulating me. I never forgot that. Coming from someone who was 5 years older made it very special. Phyllis

If It was not for this man my life would have turned out quite different.First met him (1979) when I was placed in foster care..He could of very well have placed me in jail but instead he seen something else in me….As it turns out I am a retired military member with a very successful business in the oil industry in Alberta, 3 children and a wonderful partner thats been with me for over 12 years…It is too bad that people of Maurice’s caring do not live for ever..Know that his memory lives on when people ask me what was the turning point in my life, and I say a very undestanding and kind judge Genest. All my love and sorrow for such a great loss to this world and his family for he is such a great man…
Forever will remember…

Dear Mrs. Genest,
The notice of your husbands death was passed on to me in my capacity as Director of Alumni of Stanstead College. Although we had lost contact with him I had the pleasure of looking up the year book from 1948-49 to see that he was indeed a student here. Reading what he accomplished in his life is a very remarkable story and I just wanted to let you know that we are proud to have been associated with him during his formative years. Looking through the names of the other grads of 1948-49 I could not help but see several names of alumni who still maintain contact with us. I am sure that they would like to hear of what a wonderful life Maurice made for himself and his community. I would like to have your permission to include an article on your husbands life in our next Alumni Newsletter to be sent out in February, 2007. I would be glad to send you a copy of our newsletter if you were to provide a mailing address.
Please accept the condolences of the Stanstead College community. Maurice was a man who made a difference to his fellow man.
Yours truly,
Dugie Ross

Hello – I see that I am very late in my condolences. I hope that you can pass this on to the family on my behalf. I met Judge Genest only 3 times in my life and all were in the court system. His final statement to me was: “Although I didn’t believe it now, this was probably the best thing to happen to me.” He was signing a court order to make me a crown ward and this was in 1971. I have gone on to have a blessed life. While Judge Genest passed through my life very briefly he had a significant impact on the outcome, because, it “was” the best thing to happen to me. He was wise beyond measure to see that and give me a gift he knew I would not appreciate at the time. Thank heavens for such people who walk amongst us. Bless him and all who were touched by this man. The angels surely celebrated when he was once again returned to their care. bb
