Obituary
KNOWLES, Jean Winnifred (nee MacKenzie)…
Jean Knowles passed peacefully at Grand Wood Park Retirement residence, London, Ontario on Sunday May 7, 2023 in her 95th year with family by her side.
Pre-deceased by her husband Fred Knowles (2019) after nearly 66 years of marriage. Mother of David (Kim) and Dennis (Karen). Beloved Grandmother of Matthew (Andrea), Emily (Matthew), Robert and Christine. Proud Great Grandmother of Abbie, Aubrey, and Logan. Youngest of a family of 6 children and pre-deceased by her 5 siblings Beatrice, Harold, Ruth, Donald, June.
While employed full-time, Jean still found time for her many passions in life. She was very involved at Calvary United Church where she and Fred were devoted members with Jean supporting the UCW and both attending Couples Club.
She was incredibly talented and enjoyed working with her hands. Jean was an excellent and accomplished seamstress, she could make anything from small items, such as gloves and doll clothes, to large items, including clothes and coats. She even made dance clothes for her grand daughter. Several part-time courses allowed her to create various pieces of artwork using different mediums. She also knit and crocheted. When it came to the kitchen, Jean was an excellent cook as were all her sisters. She had several signature dishes including potato salad, baked beans, Dutch apple pie, lemon meringue pie, and the greatest Black Forest Cake.
Jean was all about her family and enjoyed creating special dishes and home-made keepsakes for them. Family reunions for the MacKenzie family were epic with 50 or more family members in attendance. She will be greatly missed by many including family and life acquaintances.
Thanks to the staff at Grand Wood Park Retirement Home which have provided a wonderful environment for Jean’s past 3 years. Also, thanks to Home & Community Care palliative care staff.
A Celebration of Life or Funeral will take place at a later date. Cremation has taken place. Donations in Jean’s memory may be made to Alzheimer Society Southwest Partners, 435 Windermere Rd, London, ON N5X 2T1. Arrangements entrusted with A. Millard George Funeral Home. Jean and I were together in a class at the Kiwanis Senior Center called SunStyle which was tai chi designed for people with arthritis … back in the late 90’s. She was always cherry, enthusiastic and fun to visit with. Even though she was 17 years older than me … she seemed so young at heart, with a zest for life. She stopped attending and I talked with her over the phone on occasion. Then I developed some health issues and we lost touch. But I have very good memories of Jean. May she rest in Peace.
Dear David, Dennis and family, I read with sadness of your Moms passing. I worked with Jean at Canada Trust for several years. She was a lovely lady and a delightful coworker! I know how much her family meant to her and I recall she was very proud of her Scottish heritage! She will be sadly missed! May warm and happy memories bring you comfort.
