Passed away peacefully at University Hospital, London on Sunday, February 20, 2022 at the age of 74 from glioblastoma brain cancer.
Alan “Al” was predeceased by his parents, George and Reta Pauli and his mother-in-law, Thelma Cheney (Alfred). Devoted husband to Pat and loving father to Mike (Alexa) and Laura (Phillip). Fondly remembered by his sisters and brothers-in-law; Karen, Colleen (Tino) Brian (Colleen), Jeff (Christine) and, Tom (Sharon), his cousins; Cheryl, Doug (Sue) and, John (Jane) as well as his nephews; Brad (Chantal) and, Colton (Kate), and his niece Carly.
Born in Stratford into a music-loving family, Al attended Western University and Althouse College. He taught mathematics for 32 years at Central and Banting High Schools and coached high school badminton teams. His many hobbies included gardening, woodworking, camping, travelling and all things musical.
Al was a very kind person who loved a good joke, a game of chess or bridge and especially cribbage. Since his diagnosis, he survived the past 2 1/2 years with support from his good friends, teaching colleagues, fellow Wesley-Knox Choir members and medical and LHIN caregivers. He will be terribly missed by his family and friends.

Pat, I am so sorry to hear of Al’s passing. I met him years ago as a young teacher at Banting. He was always a professional and a gentleman. My deepest sympathy to you and your family.
Al Pauli was my friend and colleague at Banting and at Central. As a member of my mathematics department, Al always gave his support for new endeavours. It was a pleasure to visit you and Al the last years, Pat. Rudy Neufeld
Please accept my warmest condolences during this difficult time. Al you were an excellent teacher and all your students respected you.
Dear Patricia,
We are deeply touched with your loss. We will remember Al as a great friend and someone who cares for others.
Marc and Patricia
My condolences on the passing of Al. I always enjoyed conversations shared while in the choir at Riverside. He had a great, dry sense of humour.
Dear Pat and Family:
Al will be remembered as one of those Gentle Giants whose passing leaves us with a void while tempered with gratitude for his time with us. The Central Group’s favourite waitress at the Riverdale Restaurant, Nonette, remembered his name today before I offered it. Such was the impact Al had on everyone he met.
Peace.
Bruce and Jan Richardson
My deepest sympathy Pat to you and your family.
Al was a “gentle” man and a gentleman. I am in the choir and he gave myself and my spouse Randy many rides over the years. He knew that I loved rhubarb and would bring me some more than once over the season. I used to make rhubarb cakes to take to our choir parties and my UCW meetings. We will miss Al very much. Rest in peace my dear friend. My deepest sympathies to you Pat and your family. My thoughts are with you.
Dear Pat and family:
Al was a dedicated and contributing member of my staff at Central and I have always felt richer for having known him.. My sincere condolences to you and the family. He will be missed.

Mr. Pauli was an incredible teacher, both in the classroom and on the gymnasium floor. He taught me linear algebra, and also everything I know about badminton. His classroom felt much more like university than high school — not just because he often wore a tweed jacket — but because he had great command of his subject and always had ample time to delve into the history and theory behind the mathematics, not just the mechanics. One thing I’ll never forget about Mr. Pauli, beyond his smile and greatness as a teacher, was his highly-effective method for ensuring the return of a pencil or calculator lent to a student who had forgotten theirs; he would take one of their shoes as collateral. When students stood up to depart at the end of class, they never forgot to return the item. I still think of that often. Mr. Pauli will certainly be missed, but his impact can be measured across an entire generation of students.
I sang in a choir at Wesley-Knox Church with Al and was always delighted to speak with and spend time with him. He was always so gentle, kind and pleasant; always smiling; always with positive words to say. Truly a wonderful man! I’m so sorry that COVID concerns kept me and so many others who loved him from spending time with him over the last couple of years. I hope he found some enjoyment in the book of short stories I gifted him with. The world is truly a sadder place with him no longer with us. But I am equally certain that Heaven just became even better than before.
I was a student of Mr. Pauli’s from 1996 to 2000. I was fortunate to have him as my math teacher from Grades 10 to OAC.
I was fortunate to have an early prowess with math and ultimately got a degree in Math and CS from UW. Mr. Pauli had a profound impact on that direction. He was extremely supportive of my pursuits in math and often provided me additional instruction and support. He was genuinely kind and took great pride in his work as a teacher.
I am deeply sorry to hear about his passing. I also greatly regret never reaching out since I graduated. My condolences to his family and friends. We’ve lost a good one.
So very sorry to hear about your husband Pat. Thinking of you at this time.
Dear Pat, I am so sorry for your loss. Ai was special and I was so happy for you when you met and had your two beautiful children. One comforting thought was that he saw both of his children settled. as I have had a similar loss please call anytime if you need support
Pat & family – You have our deepest sympathy. We haven’t had a lot of contact since the New Year’s Day “Wyatt” reunions ended, but the loss of Alan is still great to us. Penny & I are so sorry that we can’t be there for the service. We had planned to, but Penny and our daughter Meg have come down with something and it’s best that we don’t share it with others.
God Bless,
Mike & Penny
Pat,
Al was such a wonderful man. He provided wisdom and support to the W-K Refugee Sponsorship Team. The family treasured his friendship. I loved singing across from Al in our Choir rehearsals – we shared many a laugh (and song)! Blessings to you and family.
