Obituary
HOWALD, ELMA MARIE (nee McKessock)
Always remembered for her kindness and warmth, spiritual dedication, smile and humour, plus her commitment to family, Elma died peacefully in London surrounded by her four children on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 in her 88th year. Despite Covid restrictions, Elma connected with family, friends, and Siloam United Church through permitted visits, by phone and computer (avid Zoom user) until an unexpected stroke interrupted this and led to her death in her 88th year (and she never looked her age). We were grateful to have had the past few weeks with Mom to be able to tell her what she meant to us and to reflect on a life truly well-lived. She never stopped asking about family members and assorted family pets. She loved them dearly.
Predeceased by her beloved husband, travel partner and best friend of 56 years, Harry (2011) and her special friend and cribbage opponent, Bob Griese (2019); also by her parents, Alan & Ena McKessock, of Thamesford.
Loving Mom, example, and inspiration for Kate & Nick Head of Dunnville, Bob & Joan of Mississauga, Brian & Kelly of North Vancouver, and John & Julie of Scarborough. Grandma (Granny to her great-grandchildren) is remembered for her stories, cross-stitching, Seafood Chowder, and baking by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren ~ Kate’s family: Jacob (Billie Jean) with Liam and Lilyanna, Dr. Liseann (Adrian) with Amelia; Bob’s family: Caitlin (Mike), Kimberly (Jared), Jacqueline; Brian’s family: Alyssa (Brian), Shannon (Laura); John’s family: Brendan, Laura. Elma had a special connection with her “Smith Cousin”, Elaine Clays of Thorndale.
Prior to getting married and raising a family, Elma graduated from London Normal School and taught in Ingersoll. She also returned as an occasional teacher when her children were grown. Elma was an active volunteer with Boy Scouts, various United Churches and Presbytery (Thamesford, St. Catharines, Dunnville, and London), and Hospital Auxiliaries – a Past President of Hospital Auxiliaries Association of Ontario and a Past Board Member and Treasurer of the Canadian Association of Healthcare Auxiliaries. She treasured her many friends coast to coast.
We are thankful for the many friendships Mom enjoyed at Richmond Woods Retirement Village and the attentive care she received from the Stroke Unit staff at University Hospital.

Bob, Joan, Caitlin, Kimberly and Jacqueline, so sorry for your loss. Elma always had a smile and questions for us when we would see her at family gatherings or celebrations. She was genuinely interested in people. This picture captures her personality beautifully. Condolences to all the extended Howald family.
John,
Jackie and I would like to send are deepest sympathies to you, Julie, Brendan, Laura and the rest of your family during this difficult time. Her memories will live on in you forever.
We are so sorry to hear of the loss of your mother. May God keep you in His loving care. Your family is in our prayers.
So sorry for your loss! Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family Kate! Big hug to you! ??
My condolences to her family. She was a good person and I always enjoyed talking with her when she lived in my area.??
So many memories of our family get togethers as we were growing up. Hours of our parents bridge games gave us kids lots of time to get into trouble??. Always remember Aunt Elma’s warmth and kindness and always loved (and will miss) her Christmas cards and letters over the years. Our prayers are with all of you.
Love Wendy and Dan Darling and family.
As the matriarch of the “Marie” clan, she will be greatly missed. I have many great memories visiting with Elma, even eating some of her burnt cookies that she usually saved for her kids.
Thinking of you and your family .
Janice and Bryce
I miss you already Mom but know you are always with me; in my thoughts and in my heart. ??
To the Howald family:
Elma and I spent many hours preparing activities for our cub packs, camping, and joint pack meetings. After we left that phase our our activities, when we could get together we spent hours remembering and laughing a lot. Enjoyed our connection at hospital events, and season tickets to Theatre Aquarius. Was always amazed that she would do crosswords in pen!!
You will miss our Mom , there was never any doubt how much she loved you all.
So sorry for your loss. Enjoy the happy memories.
Love,

Very sorry to hear of your loss. I recall some good times with Elma and family on long-ago family camping trips to the teachers’ federation camp at Eagle Lake. Our Mom will miss her occasional phone calls with Elma to catch up on family news.
Many great memories from the Dunnville Diltz Road farm and good times. What a wonderful life and family. A mother to be proud of.
