Obituary
MITCHELL, LEELAND H……
Lee Mitchell died peacefully on July 30, 2012 at the age of 90 while residing with family in Calgary. Lee now joins Theresa, his wife and soulmate of 62 years (2007), his parents, brothers Max and Len, his treasured sisters Rosalea, Mary and Laurena and several of his countless friends.
Dad, ‘Pops’, Grandpa, ‘Gramps’ will be sorely missed by daughter Mary Louise, four sons and their families: Kenneth and Mary, Bruce and Susan, David and Theresa, and John Wesley (Wes), 14 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Lee grew up in Watford, Ontario where his family farmed, joined up for WWII at 18, was stationed in Ottawa where he met and married Theresa Johnson.
His long and productive career in the public schools began in Chatham where he is still remembered by students from the late 40’s. After two years he moved to London Board of Education where he taught several years at Wortley Road PS and served as Vice Principal and Principal at several London schools. On the occasion of his retirement in 1978, Lee was proud of a letter from the Director of Education naming him “..the acknowledged Dean of Elementary Principals.”
Lee was an athlete — competed in track in his youth, coached public school athletes and teams through most of his career in education and competedpassionately at London Curling Club through two decades after retirement until his knees wouldn’t let him get down in the hack. Finally, Lee was a Christian and adherent of the Golden Rule, served and supported his church all his life. Cared deeply for others, which they could sense, hence his friendships with those twice his age and half his age,
of all backgrounds and pursuits.

I would like to express my condolences to the entire Mitchell family. Mr. Mitchell spent time at our office during the past couple of years and I very much enjoyed the stories he would tell. They were of his time as a Shriner visiting the sick in hospital and of his horse racing days. But most of all I liked the story of how he met his wife. He would say, I have told you this before haven’t I and I would say please tell me again. He will be missed.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. Lee was a true gentleman…we are members of St. Michael and all Angels

Dear Family,
I came to know your dad first when he and your mom came out for Christmas several years ago. It was a wondeful treat to watch them together. After the death of your mother, and your dad’s arrival in Calgary as a resident, we maintained contact at both Bruce and Mary Louise’s homes. Your dad called me “the big woman” and also, his “second daughter”. He was a gentle loving spirit, and I shall miss him a lot.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.

What a beautiful picture of Lee! That is how we will remember him. We have such good memories of happy cottage times with Lee and Terry and all the Mitchells. Lee and Jack loved to talk about their teaching days in London over a scotch … or two! Our thoughts are with you all. Lee and Terry were both such fine people! They’ve left a great legacy in you, their family.
