Obituary
DREIMANIS, Aleksis… At University Hospital, London on Friday, July 8, 2011 Aleksis Dreimanis, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Western Ontario, in his 97th year. Beloved husband of the late Anita (Kana) Dreimanis for 69 years. Dear father of Mara Love and Robert Love of Tofino, BC and Aija Downing and James Beck of London. Dear grandfather of Marc Downing and Jenny Francis of Toronto, Andrew Downing and Yesim Tosuner of Toronto, Maia Love and Eesmyal Santos-Brault of Vancouver, BC and Matthew Love of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Great-grandfather of Eva Love of Nanaimo, BC. Also survived by friends in Latvia, other countries of Europe, North America and Australia. Predeceased by his grandson Toby Love (1983). Aleksis Dreimanis was an internationally recognized expert on Canadian glacial deposits. He received honorary doctoral degrees from the University of Waterloo, the University of Western Ontario, and the University of Latvia. He published over 200 papers, most recently in 2009 at age 95. Although his academic and professional accomplishments set the highest possible standard, it was his generosity and humility that his colleagues and friends found remarkable. From a University of Western Ontario teaching award: “Aleksis Dreimanis is a highly committed man – committed to his family, his garden, and his Latvian heritage, and … to his discipline, his students, his colleagues, and his university which he served so well.” He was most proud of being the recipient of the highest award of Latvia, the Three Star Order, for his contribution as a scientist to Latvian culture. Cremation has taken place. Friends will be received by the family on Saturday, July 16, 2011 from 10:00 – 11:00 am (1 hour prior) at the A. Millard George Funeral Home, 60 Ridout Street South, London where a memorial service will be conducted in the chapel on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at 11:00am with Reverend Aina Avotins officiating. As an expression of sympathy, donations would be appreciated to a cause that was special to him: the Latvian Museum of Occupation in Riga, Latvia. (Cheques may be made payable to Latvian Relief and Development Fund with memo “In memory of Aleksis Dreimanis” and mailed to OMF, c/o Dagnija Stasko, 16 Elterwater Avenue, Nepean, ON K2H 5J2.) Dear Aija & Mara:
We were so sorry to learn of Dr. Dreimanis’s unexpected passing, so soon after your mother’s death in April. I was heartened to learn from my Dad [Gordon Winder] that he had just seen your father the previous afternoon and found him in good spirits. I well remember your father’s meticulous care of his beautiful lawn, trees and gardens; we appreciated such a lovely view from our home across the street.
You will miss your parents so dearly and we do extend to all of you our deepest sympathies.

Dear Aija and Mara,
I saw your father’s obituary in the Globe and Mail this morning. I have fond memories of meeting him when we were at Empress together. My late husband, Andres Jaaku, took a geology course from him at Western and always spoke highly of him. Even when a parent has reached a great age and death is not unexpected, it is still a sad occasion. I know, since I lost both my parents in the last few years. You and your families are in my thoughts and prayers.
Ellen (Rice) Jaaku
