Dear Cathy and Family,
Cathy, I am so sorry to hear about the sudden and unexpected loss of Peter. I have been thinking about you and your family….my thoughts are with you. Take Care Bonnie
I had the good fortune to know and work with Peter while we served in the Canadian Forces. We were employed in the Safety Cell, an often thankless but challenging task, where nonetheless we were expected to “get it right” in support of over 300 squadron personnel. Occupational safety is not a trade in the Forces. Typically, it is a secondary duty which though training is available, is learned primarily through gaining experience as you face the bumps along the way.
Like may organizations in the CF, we were short-staffed, and due to circumstances none of us could have predicted, Peter often shouldered the workload of two Sergeants and a Warrant Officer for extended periods. He did so with enthusiasm, diligence and above all compassion, for personnel facing injuries for which there might be long-term consequences.
Peter and I worked at this job together for about a year and a half. I remember when two Sergeants finally did get posted in, it was Peter who shepherded them through the variety of tasks, administration and responsibilities they would have to learn. About three weeks in to this process, one of them commented to me – words to the effect “who is this walking encyclopedia and how does he stay on top of all these issues?” I don’t know if Peter realized what a positive impact his efforts made – he truly was a pleasure to work with. His consistent approach to those thankless tasks took a lot of the sting out of that job, and I should mention that we managed to laugh along the way. When he moved on to another assignment, I had faith that the two new Sergeants had a solid foundation to execute their duties, a foundation provided by Peter.
My condolences to all.
