I will remember Robert as a smart, questioning man with a wonderful dry sense of humour. I always enjoyed chatting with him at library meetings. My deepest sympathy to your family.
Robert was dedicated to the library & its community of patrons. He was generous and compassionate & made a very fine jambalaya. He will be missed at Londonderry Library.
Joan, Dave, Andrew & Jeff:
We were saddened and shocked upon hearing of Rob’s death, what a sad loss for your family. Rob was a very kind individual that was interesting to talk with, he had many stories of his various adventures. We remember him has a great cook with a flare to exotic quisine. I know he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Our sincerest condolences.

I was saddened to hear about the death of Robert Shortreed. He was a man who possessed many good qualities: ambition, fairness, intelligence, and an admirable work ethic.
Our library was under renovation for two years. During this period we continued to serve the public in a trailer. One day a small African American boy, age three or four, spotted Robert. The boy followed him and observed his every move. He eventually approached Robert and literally “attached” himself to one of his legs. In a very dignified manner, Mr. Shortreed attempted to carry out his duties with a small person attached to his leg. It was heartwarming. I believe that this child recognized the goodness of Robert Shortreed’s soul. As an African American, I also recognized Robert’s goodness that day. Whenever the child visited the library, he searched for Mr. Shortreed.
I can only imagine the depth of your loss. Please take solace in the fact that Robert Shortreed touched may lives near and far.
Dear Joan, Dave, Andrew & Jeffery
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time, please accept our sincere condolences on the loss of a dear brother and uncle to your boys. I am not sure any of us can make any sense of the loss of one so young, and with so much left undone. It is at times such as this that our faith, and the support of family and friends can help bear the heavy burden of loss. Joan, please know that Dianne and I know your pain, and if there is anything that either of us can do to help you in any way, you have only to ask. Take care of yourself and may God bless you and your family.

I was at graduate school with Robert in the 1980s and considered him a good friend. I remember his humour and his love of cats. When I moved from London, Robert became foster father to my cat Tache. He was a very caring person.
Robert and I were fellow grad students and friends at UWO. Rest in peace, Robert.
Dear Joan and family,
I was priviledged to work with Robert as his assistant manager. The staff of Londonderry were all shocked and saddened by his loss. Personally I felt that Robert was a kindred spirit. I never felt uncomfortable around him. He and I would banter easily about many topics and he is someone that I will remember fondly always. I know that I speak for the Edmonton Public Library when I say that he will be missed! See ya Robert.
I knew Robert at “South”. I’m sad you’re gone. I always got it, although you didn’t know. And glad you became yourself. There’s lot’s of us still all ’round you … back at South. We’re proud of you.

P.S. Life’s short … see you soon …
